  • What was the purpose of the Corn Laws? Who benefited from the law? Who was hurt by the law? What major event (in Ireland) led to the repeal of the law and the collapse of the conservative government?

  • Why was the debate over Irish Home Rule so contentious and why did the British Parliament fail twice during the 19th century in granting it?
  • Was the United Kingdom a liberal or conservative country during the 19th century? Tally the years of control using this chart of British Prime Ministers during the 19th century.
  • Biography: You have been tasked to create a small 100 word entry on Queen Victoria for this website. Don't just dwell on what she did then but instead focus on how she helped shape events today.
  • Essay: It could be said that British politicians did the right thing for their country but the wrong thing for their party during the 19th century. Using the Repeal of the Corn Laws, the Passage of the Reform Acts, or the Debate over Irish Home rule as an example, verify this statement. (minimum 100 words)

  • Compare and contrast the ruling styles of Louis XVIII and Charles X. How did their decisions help or hurt the popular opinion of the Bourbon Monarchy?
  • Describe the steps that led to the July Revolution of 1830. Who led the charge in removing Charles X from power (sometimes known as the Fourth Estate)?
  • Who supported the July Monarchy of Louis-Philippe? What was Louis-Philippe's role in the government? Why was his period of rule known as a "popular monarchy" and how does it differ from an absolute monarchy?
  • Why was Louis-Philippe removed from power in the Revolutions of 1848 (and don't say because he wasn't popular anymore - be more specific)? What were the goals of the Second Republic and what was a "National Workshop"? Why would Marx say that the "June Days" uprising represented class conflict and a return to conservative leadership?
  • How did Louis Napoleon manuever his way into power in the Second Republic? Why do you think he enjoyed such popular support? Do you think his request of expanding his term beyond the four year limit was for noble (for the country) or personal reasons?
  • How did Napoleon III (formally Louis Napoleon) successfully make both spectums of French Society happy, at least when it came to economic policy? Unlike previous French rulers, what successes did he have in foreign policy prior to the Franco-Prussian War?
  • Was France a liberal or conservative country during the 19th century? Tally the years of control using this chart of French Governments during the 19th century.
  • Essay: It could be said that the French are constantly fighting for the right to be bossed around by a single individual. Why were the liberal (democratic) ideas found at the heart of those revolutions so willingly discarded for conservative (despotic) rulers? (minimum 100 words)
